Automated Piracy Threat Assessment System (APTAS)

Drum Cussac's Automated Piracy Threat Assessment System (APTAS) is an online risk assessment tool, designed to assess the likelihood of a pirate attack on a vessel transiting through high risk waters. The system allows operators to plot the entire route for their vessel, analysing the risk profile at every 25th nautical mile. APTAS provides real-time risk assessments and reports, showing the impact of a threat to capability, finance, security and reputation and allows for the input of mitigation measures to reduce the level of threat. The system identifies changing threat profiles, automatically alerting vessels and their operators.

The key benefits of APTAS:

  • Allows users to determine the level of acceptable risk, measured against multiple criteria
  • Coordinates and displays global information, producing risk and threat assessments of piracy attacks
  • Displays current and emerging areas of piracy attacks
  • Has generated interest in military and government organisations
  • Includes a database of over 6,000 ports
  • Leading insurers are evaluating the system and considering providing discounts for APTAS users
  • Stores vessel and route information for repeated use
  • Uses colour coded graphics to identify high risk locations using changing threat dynamics and alerts vessels underway to recent attacks
