APTAS Technology takes on the Pirates
Drum Cussac, the market leader in anti-piracy and maritime security consultancy, is pleased to announce the launch of their newly developed Automated Piracy Threat Assessment System (APTAS).
APTAS has been specifically designed to assess the likelihood of a pirate attack on a vessel transiting through high risk waters. The dynamic and continuous interrogation of a vessels course by APTAS, identifies changing threat profiles and automatically alerts vessels and their operators of increased levels of threat in real-time, significantly reducing the threat of piracy. APTAS is an online system that further enables users to produce accurate and up-to-date risk assessments, coupled with user defined criteria to support the impact of the threat on their capability, finance and reputation, alongside applied levels of security and protection.
The system is recognised by leading insurers and is generating interest in military and government organisations.
Drum Cussac Managing Director, Jeremy Stampa Orwin, says: "The threat to shipping from piracy on a worldwide basis is not a constant. It varies considerably according to the type of vessel, time of year and in particular geography. We can now identify when the threat to a vessel changes, automatically alerting the Captain, or those with an interest in the vessel, allowing decisions to be made to counter emerging threats as they happen."
APTAS allows users to plot the entire route for their vessel, analysing the route risk profile at every 25th nautical mile. Its dynamic nature means that it does not simply determine where attacks have taken place, but identities specific risk, based on actual route and vessel information. As the threat profiles changes, APTAS will identify this and provide accurate information automatically, such as the location of a new series of pirate attacks, what the activity is and whether this affects the course the vessel is on.
David Pickard, Head of Maritime at Drum Cussac, added: "This level of detail gives shipping management companies control over threat mitigation measures required to reduce the risk to their vessels and enables them to assist in ensuring the safety of their vessels and to protect the welfare of their crew."
