Tackling Piracy at Sea, Westbury Hotel, Mayfair, London, UK 18–19 March 2009

February 2009

Now that international naval forces are patrolling the Gulf of Aden, it is hoped that piracy in the region will be curbed or cease altogether. The Tackling Piracy conference will debate whether such initiatives are sufficient to tackle piracy or if the potential rewards in the form of ransoms paid will outweigh the associated risks for pirates.

Bringing together senior representatives from government, navies, the shipping industry, unions, insurance companies, private security companies and regulatory bodies, the conference will debate where pirates should be detained and prosecuted, how the underlying political problems in Somalia need to be tackled to bring about a solution, and why ship operators are increasingly turning to private security companies or avoiding the Gulf of Aden altogether with the resulting impact on trade.
