Long Range Acoustic Device (LRAD)

Drum-Cussac the risk management specialist has been appointed to sell the Long Range Acoustic Device.

The LRAD has been at sea since May 2003 and provides an immediate non-lethal defence enhancement to the protection of yachts, shipping, floating storage production vessels, offshore platforms, workboats and personnel working in potentially hostile environments.

Devised by the American Technology Corporation, the media televised it's powerful capabilities to the world when it was deployed against heavily armed pirates during an attack on the Seaborne Spirit cruise liner 100 miles of the coast of Somalia in November 2005.

With a range in excess of 500 yards the LRAD is optimised for a frequency of 2000 Hertz, the frequency humans are most sensitive to. This enables the operator to control a hostile environment without the need for arms or can provide emergency mass notification at public gatherings.

It is easily transportable, weighing less than 90lbs and needs only a 2 amp power supply. The LRAD Integrated searchlight can illuminate targets up to 1.5 miles away.

James Howard-Higgins of Drum Cussac said, "In a world that is becoming increasingly hostile, with the threat of pirates becoming greater, we are delighted to be able to offer our maritime clients this device to help protect them at sea. The navy and armed forces have proved its effectiveness and whilst we do not suggest that this alone will secure a vessel it can deter the majority of situations".
